Job Description
We have an exciting opportunity to join the Idlewild team! We are looking for someone confident in animal care who is looking to work as part of our team caring for, cleaning and feeding the animals. The staff member will be required to work alongside the sanctuary manager and deputise in their absence, supervising all animal care staff and volunteers. For this role you must be confident in managing a team of people, handling a range of large and small animals and be able to drive to do vet trips in an emergency.
Communication and good people skills are important as part of the role involves conducting a welcoming and informative tour for members of the public, assisting the sanctuary manager with the rehoming service by conducting viewings and adoption hand overs of animals. (You will also be required to deal with public enquiries by phone, email and via the Facebook page).
When the manager is not on site, the staff member would be expected to liaise with the veterinarian professionals regarding health concerns that arise with the animals. We also need someone who is prepared to conduct voluntary sleep overs to ensure the sanctuary is manned.
Deputy Manager responsibilities
- Be prepared to conduct voluntary sleep-overs to ensure the sanctuary is manned
- Be prepared to work at short notice/outside regular hours to deal with animal emergencies
- Liaise with the Veterinarian professionals regarding health concerns that arise with the animals (In the managers absence)
- This role will involved working each Weekend along with days in the week as per the needs of the Sanctuary

You must be keen and willing to go above and beyond to help the sanctuary and the needs of the animals. Often the work falls outside of working hours as emergencies can come in at any time and you must be willing to come in at short notice. There will be rota on on call shared with the manager. This role will involved working each weekend along with days in the week as per the needs of the Sanctuary. The hours will vary – this will be a mix of early’s, days and late’s. It will involving working Bank Holidays including Christmas and New Year. The successful candidate needs to be a person who puts animal care above all else and will be reliable in their approach to work. This is a vocation not a job. In return, you will get to work outside with animals and share in the sanctuary atmosphere.
